The LP crossed the threshold of 500,000 in sales as of December 13, less than three months after its debut. good kid also had the biggest opening week of a hip hop album this year, bowing at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 242,000 copies sold.
As for how he's had so much success, Kendrick said he focuses on originality first and foremost in a recent interview with KillerHipHop.com.
"I really can’t speak on other artists, but for me what I try to do is just stay as original as possible. And have my own sound that nobody can really duplicate," he said. "Nobody can really make sense of doing it easily. It's really my niche and that’s what I think everybody in the game should have, their own niche. Nobody really follows each other. Cause when you do original things you elevate the art and culture of hip hop."
